Global Head Sustainable Transport and Fuels Job at HSBC – London
HSBC has put the transition to net-zero at the centre of its corporate strategy and is building out its Climate Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Global Sustainability to achieve this. The role of the CoE is to work with front-line bankers around the world providing expert input to support HSBC’s climate strategy and re-wire and align the bank to net-zero.
These roles are at the cutting edge of applying global finance to the climate challenge and offer an exciting and rare opportunity to join a high performing function in a senior position that is all about impact. You will be provided access to our senior leaders across the business, the ability to help shape the future strategy of HSBC and guide and support our clients on their transition journeys.
The Global Head of Sustainable Transport will play a key role in helping the Bank and its customers around the world transform to a Net Zero future. The role will have a particular focus on client/customer-facing engagement, developing opportunities to transition road transport and auto manufacturing, aviation, shipping and rail, to electric and clean fuels and helping to align HSBC’s portfolio of financed emissions to Net Zero by 2050, at the latest. The role holder will help shape HSBC’s net-zero strategy globally, leveraging HSBC’s capital and networks to shape and advance the transition to a net zero future.
Role responsibilities:
Collaborate with bankers and regional leadership to drive client outreach and engagement on opportunities relating to sustainable transport, helping the bank to review and assess client transition plans, and finance the transition.
Act as a “go-to” senior expert for HSBC on transition pathways for road, aviation, shipping and rail sectors, helping to shape and deliver the bank’s net zero strategy.
Shape and execute the work of the Group Head of Climate Transition, Chief Sustainability Officer and the Global Sustainability Function, working with an international team of experts, driving delivery in the regions.
Support the bank’s external engagement on sustainable transport with regulators, central banks and governments, think tanks, NGOs and academia.
Help build new capabilities to incorporate transition into credit risk for the auto sector, airlines, aircraft owners and manufacturers and shipping companies working with the Risk Function.
Use expertise to upskill HSBC’s front-line bankers on low-carbon technology and decarbonisation pathways for the transport sector, working closely with Group HR – Learning and Development, and Sustainability Leads in Global Businesses and Functions.
Provide expert input to the bank’s climate analytics and climate modelling work, including the financed emissions and target setting within the Climate Aligned Finance programme
Requirements
Requirements to be successful for the role:
Strong technical understanding of the transport sector covering fuels and technologies, energy markets, supply chains, and experience working with and developing energy, production and emissions models for these sectors.
Deep expertise on climate change and net-zero transition, including electric and clean fuel technologies such as EVs and sustainable aviation fuel, decarbonization pathways for road, shipping and aviation, regulatory and policy levers, carbon budgets, and both transition risk and physical climate risk.
Familiarity with a range of standards and frameworks, including the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net-Zero (GFANZ), Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Financial Services Taskforce (FSTF) and the United Nations Environment Program Net-zero Banking Alliance (NZBA) as well as major net-zero energy scenarios including the International Energy Agency Net-Zero Emissions Scenario (NZE), and BloombergNEF’s New Energy Outlook (NEO), among others.
Ideally, previous experience in sector-relevant transactions, project finance or capital markets. Work experience in Asia or the Middle East is an advantage.
